Congratulations to the West New York Crossing Guards!

June 1, 2012

After 2 years of bureaucratic red tape and stonewalling, Local 108 came through and won big for the West New York Crossing Guards. Despite a change of mayor and other roadblocks, the representatives and negotiating committee stayed focused on negotiating a fair contract… and it paid off.

Crossing Guards will receive an increase of $.75 per hour effective September 1, 2012, an additional increase of $.75 per hour September 1, 2013, and another increase of $.75 on September 1, 2014. The starting pay rate has also been increased to $10.50 per hour. Crossing guards will also receive 3 additional sick days, bring their total to 10 per year.

The contract also includes a basic medical plan for employees who do not have access to any other medical insurance. Employees who will be retiring prior to September 1, 2012 will receive a retroactive pay increase for years 1 and 2 of the contract.

"I am proud to have been a part of a negotiation that brought a well-deserved benefit package to these hard working people who help protect the school children of West New York." -Charles N. Hall, Jr., Local 108 President

"We have come a long way in 12 years from minimum wage to a fair contract that includes paid time off and a medical plan. I will be retiring soon, but the thing I am very happy about is that we brought a union in to represent us."-Florence Albertson, Crossing Guard

"Our union did a good job for us and I appreciate that."-Daisy Rodriguez, Crossing Guard
