On Thursday, October 20th, Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union, UFCW, Local 108, co-hosted the People's Organization for Progress’ Daily Peoples Campaign for Jobs, Peace, Equality and Justice!
The rally marks 116 consecutive days of this Campaign’s rallies. POP vows to host this daily action everyday for 381 days in honor of the epic Montgomery Bus Boycott that propelled a young Martin Luther King Jr. onto national consciousness! A ‘national jobs program’ is at the top of the list of the core issues driving the Daily Campaign.
On Monday, October 24th, the Newark Teachers Association will co-host the Campaign.
The last several weeks have seen the American Civil Liberties Union, the Newark chapter of the NAACP and the New Black Panther Party co-host strong rallies for the Daily Campaign.
To date, 49 organizations have endorsed the Daily Campaign.
“We intend to gust into Winter and sprout into Spring with this Campaign,” said a determined Lawrence Hamm, chairman for the Peoples Organization for Progress.
“What is happening here and what’s happening on Wall Street is not happening in a vacuum,” he continued.
“It’s happening against a global background of people refusing to accept these callous policies and the demoralizing conditions they are creating.”
The Campaign was launched on June 27th to dramatize the impact of draconian public policies on ordinary people.
Monday through Friday, the Daily Campaign takes place from 4:30-6pm at the Lincoln Monument, Springfield Av. and West Market Street. Saturdays, the Daily Campaign takes place on Broad and Market Streets, downtown Newark from 12 noon to 2pm. On Sundays, the Daily Campaign returns to the Lincoln Monument from 2-3pm.
The People’s Organization for Progress meets every Thursday at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 224 West Kinney Street, Newark at 6:30pm.
