Struggle for a Fair Contract at Strauss Continues

April 10, 2009

Strauss Auto Workers
Want a Fair Contract!
But Management only wants Givebacks
April 30, 2009

Background

Local 108 has been negotiating with Strauss management for 11 months for a new contract. In February, Strauss filed for Chapter 11. Strauss then declared that everything we had previously agreed to be withdrawn, and assumed a new bargaining posture in which they demanded unfair givebacks: wage freezes and reductions, elimination of pension, elimination of seniority, and elimination in paid time off. They demanded all this after reserving up to $672,000 in severance pay for a few key Strauss executives.

Update

Local 108 realizes we have to make shared sacrifices to help our employers as long as management does the same, and we also share in the profits in the good times.

To show our good faith the union negotiating committee has tentatively agreed to major compromises in medical (reduced employer premiums, and increased employee contributions), a two year wage freeze, and concessions in paid time off.

The company is still demanding more. At a union and company meeting on April 8th, the Company put forth brand new proposals seeking even more concessions; in fact Strauss inserted new language and items never discussed or agreed on. This type of negotiating is disingenuous and dishonest. It is now Local 108’s opinion that Strauss does not want to negotiate a fair contract. They want to break the union! We want a fair contract!

We will be watching throughout the bankruptcy process to ensure that Strauss management does not reward themselves at the expense of destroying the company and the lives of the workers at Strauss.
